چکیده

The Bowland Shale Formation is one of the most promising targets for unconventional exploration in United Kingdom, with estimated resources large enough to supply country's entire natural gas consumption 50 years. However, development has stalled due concerns over hydraulic-fracturing induced seismicity. Only three wells have been drilled and hydraulic fractured date Shale, all produced levels seismicity sufficient magnitude be felt at surface. Susceptibility will determined by presence critically-stressed faults. such faults can go undetected conventional interpretation 2D or 3D seismic surveys if they are shorter that resolution retrievable from a survey, low (and some cases even zero) vertical displacement. In cases, cause may only visible via microseismic observations once reactivated. To better identify fault planes images, their reactivation potential fracturing, high-resolution fault-detection attribute was tested survey acquired Preston New Road site, where two shale-gas were hydraulic-fractured 2018 2019, obtaining lengths between 400 1500 meters. Fault slip then integrating obtained formation's stress pore pressure conditions (with shale also being significantly overpressured), several critically stressed identified near previously wells. largest events approximately 200 meters length magnitudes below 3.0 (as imaged multicomponent, downhole monitoring array deployed during fracturing stimulations), could not mapped larger than length.

Sensitivity Analysis of Seismic Velocity and Attenuation Variations for Longmaxi Shale during Hydraulic Fracturing Testing in Laboratory

During the hydraulic fracturing procedure in shale-gas exploitation, the poroelastic properties of shale formation can be altered significantly. However, it is difficult to evaluate these variations using microseismic field data. In this study, we conduct a hydro-fracturing experiment using Longmaxi shale, which is a major formation for shale-gas production in China, to simulate the water injec...

Simulating Fully 3D Hydraulic Fracturing

1.0 Introduction Hydraulic fracturing, the process of initiation and propagation of a crack by pumping fluid at relatively high flow rates and pressures, is one of several techniques for creating cracks in rock. Fractures in the earth's crust are desired for a variety of reasons, including enhanced oil and gas recovery, re-injection of drilling or other environmentally sensitive wastes, measure...

Microbial communities in flowback water impoundments from hydraulic fracturing for recovery of shale gas.

Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas extraction from shale produces waste brine known as flowback that is impounded at the surface prior to reuse and/or disposal. During impoundment, microbial activity can alter the fate of metals including radionuclides, give rise to odorous compounds, and result in biocorrosion that complicates water and waste management and increases production costs. Here, ...

Economic Evaluation of Bowland Shale Gas Wells Development in the UK

The UK has had its fair share of the shale gas revolutionary waves blowing across the global oil and gas industry at present. Although, its exploitation is widely agreed to have been delayed, shale gas was looked upon favorably by the UK Parliament when they recognized it as genuine energy source and granted licenses to industry to search and extract the resource. This, although a significant p...

Energy Analysis of Hydraulic Fracturing

In this paper, numerical simulations of circular boreholes under internal hydraulic pressure are carried out to investigate the energy transferred to the surrounding rock and the breakdown pressure. The simulations are conducted by using a micromechanical continuum damage model proposed by Golshani et al. (2006). The simulation results suggest that the borehole breakdown pressure and the energy...
